The Remixes - EP

Mixmag presents ‘Teddy Pendergrass: The Remixes’

Release date: 8th March
Label: Philadelphia International Records

In support of the feature-length documentary ‘Teddy Pendergrass – If You Don’t Know Me’, Mixmag presents ‘Teddy Pendergrass: The Remixes’. Featuring contributions from the foremost figures in the global electronic music scene Jamie Jones, Damian Lazarus, DJ Pierre, Francesca Lombardo and Cassy, the remix EP will be out on Friday 8th March on Philadelphia International Records via Legacy Recordings a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

Throughout the EP, selections from Teddy Pendergrass’ timeless catalogue are reimagined through an electronic lens. Opening the release is Jamie Jones’ remix of ‘Life is a Song Worth Singing’. Faithful to the feel-good essence of the original track, Jamie delivers a rippling, synth-based interpretation. Damian Lazarus manipulates the powerful tones Teddy was famed for on ‘I Don’t Love You Anymore’, building an ambient disco groove around sparse vocal lines. ‘Do Me’, a signature record that solidified Pendergrass’ sex symbol status receives a rhythmic, dreamy rework courtesy of Francesca LombardoCassy’s remix of ‘Only You’ substitutes its funky roots in favour of a thumping and bass-driven affair ready to set any dancefloor alight before acid house legend DJ Pierre closes up proceedings.

‘Teddy Pendergrass – If You Don’t Know Me’ – a documentary co-produced by Mixmag’s parent company Wasted Talent – chronicles the life and career of one of soul music’s most cherished artists. As one of the first African-American artists to produce four consecutive platinum albums, Teddy Pendergrass was undeniably on the brink of a superstardom to rival the likes of Marvin Gaye, Barry White or even Michael Jackson, when fate took a drastic, almost fatal turn. Through interviews with family, friends and colleagues the film tells the story of his rise to fame within the complexities of 60s and 70s America, his tragic fall and his triumphant comeback.

Producer of the documentary, Piers Tempest commented: “Teddy’s story is an important and ultimately inspiring one and we are delighted to help shine a light on the man and his music”.

Mixmag’s Global Editorial Director, Nick DeCosemo, comments further: “It’s a testament to Teddy’s influence and legacy that some of the biggest names in contemporary dance music jumped at the chance to remix his classic tracks. Mixmag is so proud to help honour Teddy’s legacy and bring his music to a new generation of fans.”

‘Considerably superior’: Teddy Pendergrass documentary closes out Philadelphia Film Festival

Closing out the 11-day affair that was the world premiere of the Philadelphia Film Festival, was the world premiere of Teddy Pendergrass: If You Don’t Know Me, a documentary feature about the late Philly soul legend. The film is a success, for two reasons: It gets across Pendergrass’ unique appeal, and it’s full of great stories by musical old timers and the singer’s other collaborators.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME Documentary Tells The Inspiring Story Behind ‘Soul’s Sexiest Superstar’

Teddy Pendergrass – If You Don’t Know Me, the powerful and moving story of R&B star Teddy Pendergrass, who was on the brink of global super-stardom when tragedy struck, is following its triumphant premier on the closing night of October’s Philadelphia Film Festival, with a screening at DOC NYC on November 9. It has also been selected to screen at the 19th, annual Sound Unseen music/film/art festival taking place from Nov 14-18, 2018 in Minneapolis, MN.

Teddy and Joan Pendergrass Foundation makes gift to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital

Members of the Teddy & Joan Pendergrass Board of Directors visited Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, Massachusetts, where they toured the state-of-the-art facility with hospital officials. During the visit Foundation President Mrs. Joan Pendergrass donated $3,000.00 to the hospital to benefit the Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) inpatient program, one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind in the nation.

The Foundation, which is led by Pendergrass’s widow, Joan, continues to focus on its number one goal, which is to ensure people living with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI), continue to advance and lead productive lives. The continued goal carries on through its aim to help others with SCI achieve their maximum potential while keeping Teddy’s mission and legacy alive. In the photos you can see Teddy’s wife Joan Pendergrass, board members: Jessica Avila, Pamela Thomas and Tomas Avila, hospital staff: Steven Patrick, Vice President of Development, Dan Meninger, Director of Inpatient Programs and Andrea Ferreira, Director, Foundation Relations & Research Advancement.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the largest inpatient rehabilitation facilities in the United States and has been consistently ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Issue each year since 1995 – the only rehabilitation hospital in New England to do so. Spaulding was ranked at #4 in the nation in the 2017/2018 rankings. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston is the flagship institution of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, providing comprehensive rehabilitation treatment to a wide spectrum of patients.
